Workshop on Critical thinking in speaking

Critical thinking is among the first causes for change (personal and
social), but is a pariah in schools –for no other reason than it conditions
the mind to suspect the form and function of everything it sees, including
your classroom and everything being taught in it.
In this workshop we will:
  • define what we mean by critical thinking,
  • see how learners demonstrate critical thinking,
  • try together a range of activities that promote critical thinking in speaking.

Τα δύο τελευταία χρόνια οι μαθητές και οι οικογένειές τους κλήθηκαν να αντιμετωπίσουν δύο μεγάλες προκλήσεις που η μία επηρέαζε την άλλη. Από τη μία ο εγκλεισμός στο σπίτι και από την άλλη η τηλεκπαίδευση που έφερε μπροστά από τις οθόνες όλους τους μαθητές. Οι συνθήκες που διαμορφώθηκαν δημιούργησαν πολλά προβλήματα σε όλους τους μαθητές, περισσότερο όμως επηρεάστηκαν οι μαθητές με Μαθησιακές Δυσκολίες. Μερικές από τις αλλαγές αφορούσαν στη μαθησιακή λειτουργία, στην παρατεταμένη χρήση υπολογιστή, στην προσαρμογή της μελέτης και των εργασιών στη ψηφιακή μορφή, στην απομόνωση από τους συμμαθητές, στη μη εκτόνωση της σωματικής ενέργειας, στο φόβο της ασθένειας κλπ. Τα αποτελέσματα είναι ορατά σήμερα σε όλες τις δομές της εκπαίδευσης. Το ερώτημα των εκπαιδευτικών είναι: πώς θα βοηθήσουμε αυτούς τους μαθητές να βρουν τις νέες ισορροπίες τους για να ανταπεξέλθουν στις προκλήσεις;

Teaching for raising awareness for social issues

As language teachers in the 21st century, we need to enable students to effectively acquire a foreign language while empowering them with the knowledge, skills, and commitment required to become socially responsible global citizens. In this presentation, we will discuss teaching for raising awareness for social issues with reference to the ´Stop Bullying´ project, gold award winner at the 2021 ELT Excellence Awards.

Teaching through literature

Undoubtedly, the use of literature and storytelling as supplementary material in the classroom is by no means new. However, using it as a core subject in school syllabus is perhaps challenging to consider. When this is done through a creative lens, it can certainly bring about unimaginable rewards for all sides involved: school, teachers, and students.
