Panel Discussion

The ELT 2021 INFLUENCERS discuss the new school year

The pandemic has overturned traditional assumptions in education. What becomes clear is that the frameworks that previously worked for education are no longer guaranteed to function.

  • Can flipped learning be exactly the right model for where education is heading? E.g. Traditional frameworks assume that we operate in a scarcity model of information; flipped learning assumes that information is abundant and (mostly) freely available.
  • We used to take meeting in person in a classroom for granted; will we ever be able to do that again, even once the pandemic is over?
  • Will we continue to assess students through traditional timed testing any time we want? Has the pandemic dealt a death blow to the entire concept of timed testing?
  • Are pedagogical assumptions of traditional frameworks now out of the window? Can we still assume that we can keep technology at arms' length, that students have empty heads, or that students can't teach themselves things?
  • Once the pandemic continues to ease, and we begin to start making our way back to the physical classroom, we would try to get "back to normal". How ‘normal’ will ‘back to normal’ be?
  • Would it be a tragic mistake to exit this horrific time in history by wasting the opportunity to get rid of outdated models – and all their associated injustices, inequities, and inefficiencies – and put on something better for our students?

SPACE IS THE PLACE: Making magic in the EFL classroom

The real joy of teaching lies in the unexpected turns that lessons suddenly take, the stories, jokes and banter that suddenly burst forth from our students. Learning how to create the space in which this kind of magic can occur takes time and requires a keen focus on language. In this talk, I’ll be unpicking the process.

English Language Examinations Dupery and Myths

Parents in Greece are made to believe that in order to ensure the future of their kids they need an international certificate of their English language skills and because the testing agencies claim their test is better than those provided by other agencies and also because it is easier to obtain a B2 or even a C1 level with some tests than with others, parents – if they have the money – tend to err on the safe side and require their kids to sit for at least two or three international certificates.

Unfortunately, the claims and promises provided by the test publishers are seldom true.
In this presentation will talk about false claims and misleading promises, even from the KPG exams run by the Hellenic Ministry of Education.

Back to School with Hybrid and Blended Learning

With the 2020-21 school year in the rearview mirror, now it’s the time to take a breath and turn our attention to the new school year. It appears that Covid-19 is here to stay. Schools will open and close many times, perhaps not at a national but at a local level. Students in Covid-19 restricted areas won’t be able to attend psychical classes for a limited period of time.

• What strategies and mindsets should we consider to make a hybrid learning environment as productive as possible?
• Focusing on students’ skills while they are in class is easy. How easy is it to focus on individual skills during a synchronous lesson with, say, 5 or more kids attending the same session online?
• What role will physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being play for those students who will be obliged to attend classes from home in order for meaningful learning to occur? How can teachers support learner well-being in a hybrid model?
• What types of activities should be best suited for online vs. in-person learning in a hybrid environment?
• Within a hybrid learning environment, the reliance on screen time and digital tools will still be heavy. Should we consider establishing a culture of digital citizenship from the start with lessons on topics like finding credible news, responding to online hate speech, and dealing productively with digital drama?
• How can we assess all students in a fair and just way?

Escape Rooms for the English Classroom

English language learning has changed focus to a more student-centred model, placing learners at the centre of teaching. The use of an escape room is one such innovative learner-focused activity, in which a team of players cooperatively discover clues in order to progress through the challenge. Escape rooms can be used in English language learning as a tool for introducing a new topic both in a f2f and an online setting.

Writing for Young Learners

Teaching young learners how to write is a meticulous task which requires our unwavering devotion to detail, as it is considered by many to be the culmination of a multitude of well-developed language skills. Writing at a young age not only influences the learner to develop and express his critical thought, but will also inspire him to practice and embed the key elements of the target language.

Adaptive testing and LanguageCert Test of English (LTE)

This talk describes LanguageCert’s non-linear Test of English (LTE) ‘adaptive’ test – how it looks and how it works. Whereas most tests are viewed by teachers and students as a linear set of items that a student grinds through from the first item to the last, an ‘adaptive’ test adapts – in real time – to a student’s responses and moves to a higher or lower level to adjust to the student’s real level of proficiency. Following a brief overview of computer adaptive testing (CAT), and of how CATs function and operate, the talk outlines the LanguageCert adaptive test. The talk closes with a comment on what taking a CAT means for a student, and how the LanguageCert LTE CAT compares with its pen-and-paper sister.

QLS -ILEARN: THE LMS BRINGING STUDENTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF LEARNING

Covid necessitated certain changes in the features of the educational procedures and some of them are here to stay!  Which of these will we keep for our learners in the post-Covid era?

Without a doubt, our LMS, which take teaching and learning to an entirely new Era, are not only an added advantage, but a mandatory tool.

QLS has pioneered the use of an LMS in our schools since 2017.  Now is the time to reap the rewards and take it one step further.

Helping each other develop: observing other teachers

The best way to develop as a teacher happens to be a procedure that is accessible to all of us, easy to implement and beneficial to everyone involved: peer observation. In this presentation, I will outline possible benefits of peer observation and different ways in which it can be implemented. I will then demonstrate and share observation checklists that we can use to observe and learn from each other and fun, sensitive ways of giving each other feedback on our teaching.

Secrets of writing

More writing will not result in better writing form: Writing form is the result of reading. But writing can help us solve problems and can make us smarter. “Meaning is what you end up with, not what you start out with” (Peter Elbow). The key to making this happen is REVISION.
